"The goal of the community is to make sure that each member is heard and is properly giving the gifts he has brought to this world." - Sobonfu Somé
On June 18th, the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education voted 5-1 to approve Empower to open Fall 2019!
This momentous decision would not have happened were it not for each of you sharing your gifts with our community. You spent countless hours knocking on doors, collecting signatures, attending Community Design Team meetings, visiting schools across the country, 1-on-1 meetings with elected officials or district staff and delivering passionate speeches at Board meetings.
With a newly elected Board, we were unsure of their values and their political commitments. Yet, we won and we did it with a clear message grounded in community. We now have the opportunity to not only show Aurora but the world, the true power of what happens when community meets passion and determination. There is no one on the planet more passionate about the well-being, intellectual, and leadership development of our children than our community.
There are many challenges ahead that will require all of us sharing our gifts in collaboration with one another. If we are successful, the fruits of our labor will be clear in 2027. Our first class of Empower students will be graduating from universities or launching their businesses or social ventures. One fact will remain consistent. When asked whose world is this? Our graduates will always proudly declare: "the world is ours".
With love and gratitude,

Whittney Robinson Johnson, Board Chair
